My First Hill2Hill 100km
Hill2Hill
(Hilton to Hillcrest)
100km, 1950m of climbing

This was
going to be my first full distance Hill2Hill. I was anxious, nervous and keen
to see how I would cope with a 100km as I haven’t done such a long distance on
my MTB bike before.
The weather wasn’t
so kind to us in KZN this weekend, with heavy rainfall leading up to Sunday.
We started
at Worlds View at 6am on Sunday morning, in the women’s batch. It was a small
bunch of women but we had a strong field of women on the line up. It was great
lining up with my teammate Candice Neethling (who had just got back from world
XCO championships), there was defiantly going to be some exciting racing from
this group of women!
Due to the hectic
rain over the weekend the technical parts of the race were going to be more
challenging in the slippery conditions, especially the descendant from World’s
View into town.
The first
30km went by very quickly as it is quite a fast section of the race, this is where
one must remember not to go full out on the gas as we still have 70km left. As well
as the last 30km are not the easiest
with some mean climbs, so to have some energy in the legs left for the end is a
good idea J.
With the
muddy, wet and slippery conditions there were some sections where one had to
portage but otherwise everything else was ride able.
I was so
happy when I heard the sound of the commentator and the music playing, I knew
there wasn’t far to go now! And to top it off I crossed the finish line in
great spirits and with my teammate Candice Neethling (who unfortunately got
lost near the end and ended up doing a few extra kilometres). I am very glad to
have finished my first Hill2Hill and still managing to get a top 10, it truly
is a self-accomplishmentJ.
A big thank
you to all the support and encouragement from everyone on the route, especially
my wonderful parents. Who were at every feed/technical zone supporting me and
giving my juice and lube, it truly made a difference having them along side me.

Thank you!!!

The next
race I will be doing is the MTN Hilton Dirt Festival 75km this weekend coming.
See you
there!!!
